(1) Gummy vitamins have many added ingredients just to make that gummy “matrix” taste good - that have nothing to do with the active…
ingredients you actually want. You’re getting a lot of “extra” ingredients
* That means extra sweeteners, flavorings, and that gel base - that you don’t need in a chewable
* That’s why, you’ll often need “2 gummies” to get a full dose, while a single chewable can be enough.
(2) Nutrient stability -
* Many nutrients that go into a gummy can be very sensitive to processing, and to make that gummy matrix, you need moisture and heat. That means that this nutrients - that wouldn’t have the same exposure in a chewable - may degrade faster in a gummy during processing, and perhaps also in the jar.
(3) Bioavailability - there is some evidence that the gummy “matrix” directly impacts how nutrients are retained and released - and absorbed - once it’s in your body.
(4) Teeth! Gummy vitamins stick to teeth longer, increasing cavity risk.
If you’re giving your child a vitamin, the goal isn’t just to take it— it’s to actually get a reliable, effective dose your body can use.
And it’s important for parents to know that not all forms deliver that equally.
This is not to say that all gummy products are bad – there are companies that try very hard and are aware of these limitations and tried to compensate for them. But definitely not all. And I also think that it’s important that parents are aware of the trade-offs.
That’s why whenever there’s an option, i’ll opt for a chewable for my kids, instead of a gummy vitamin.
